The legendary drummer, producer, filmmaker, author, and co-founder of The Roots has spent decades influencing music, culture, and generations of musicians around the world.
This week’s Drum Club Global Groove of the Day showcases exactly why.
The video, which has already generated nearly 40,000 views within its first week on YouTube, captures Questlove doing something deceptively simple: playing a groove.
No fireworks.
No unnecessary complexity.
Just world-class feel.
The timing couldn’t be better.
Following the excitement surrounding Jay-Z’s widely discussed appearance at Roots Picnic, interest in The Roots and the musicians behind some of hip-hop’s most iconic live performances has surged once again.
For drummers, Questlove represents something increasingly rare in today’s content-driven world:
Substance.
His approach emphasizes timing, dynamics, touch, musicality, and serving the song above all else.
That’s precisely why he continues to influence everyone from beginners picking up sticks for the first time to Grammy-winning professionals.
What Can Drummers Learn From Questlove?
• Groove before chops
• Feel before flash
• Consistency before complexity
• Musicality before ego
These principles have helped establish Questlove as one of the most respected musicians of his generation.
